In recent months, calls have been mounting for the government to cut the GST on food. The argument goes that food is a necessity, and that the GST is a regressive tax that hits low-income earners the hardest.

There is no doubt that food is a necessity, and that the GST does disproportionately impact low-income earners. However, calls for the GST to be cut are misguided, for a number of reasons.

For starters, it is important to remember that the GST is not a tax on food itself, but rather on the value-added component of food. This means that the GST is only levied on the difference between the price of the raw ingredients and the final retail price. The impact of the GST on food prices is therefore relatively small.

Secondly, the GST is not the only tax that applies to food. There are also import tariffs, excise taxes, and various other levies. The overall tax burden on food is therefore much higher than the GST alone.

Finally, and most importantly, cheaper food comes with other costs. The fact is, food is produced in an increasingly industrialized and globalized manner, with all of the associated environmental and social costs. Factory-farmed meat, for example, is linked to air and water pollution, soil depletion, and the overuse of antibiotics.

In short, calls for the GST to be cut are short-sighted. If we are truly concerned about the cost of food, we need to take a holistic view and consider the full range of taxes and other costs involved. Only then can we develop policies that will make food more affordable for everyone.
