A father who struggled to walk has shed eight stone in 10 months after joining a weight loss programme specifically for men.
Andrew Shanahan, 39, from Wolverhampton, decided to join MAN v FAT after his son’s swimming teacher commented on his weight.
The father-of-one had ballooned to 25st 7lbs and was a size 54 waist. He was so ashamed of his appearance that he refused to be seen in public without a T-shirt on.
But after shedding the weight, he is now a healthy 17st 7lbs and a size 36 waist.
Mr Shanahan said: “I’ve always been a bit overweight but after having my son four years ago, I gradually started to put on more and more weight.
“I was eating takeaway most nights and not really exercising. I knew I needed to do something about it but I didn’t have the motivation.
“I was really conscious of my weight and I didn’t like to be seen in public. I was too embarrassed to take my shirt off in front of people.
“I realised I needed to do something when my son’s swimming teacher said to me ‘I bet you wish you could swim like that, Andrew’. It really hit home.”
He added: “When I joined MAN v FAT, it was a bit daunting because I didn’t know anyone else there.
“But it’s been great because it’s given me the structure and support I need to lose weight. I’m so much more confident now and I feel so much better.”
The programme, which is run by a team of experts, helps men lose weight through a points-based system, exercise classes, motivation and support groups.
Mr Shanahan said: “I would definitely recommend it to other men who are struggling to lose weight. It’s been a great help to me.”
