Michael Mosley, strictly following a new diet regime for just two weeks has seen amazing results. The results have been so significant that the journalist and broadcaster has now given it his full backing.
The plan is called the “5:2 diet” and involves eating what you want for five days a week, then eating just 600 calories for the other two days.
“I’m a convert to the 5:2,” Mosley told ITV’s This Morning.
“I’ve been doing it for seven weeks now, I’m down a kilo and a half and what is really interesting is my waist size has gone down.”
The 52-year-old said that although he was not overweight, he had “let himself go” a bit after the birth of his third child.
“I found it very hard to get the weight off,” he said.
“I tried all sorts of different diets and then I came across this research, which is really interesting, about periods of fasting.”
Mosley, who has previously fronted documentaries on health issues including alcohol and sugar, said he did not want to “endorse any diet” but the 5:2 worked for him.
“If you can do something for two days a week that is not hard, that is do-able and you can see the results, then that is great,” he said.
“What is interesting about this diet is it’s not about cutting calories all the time, it’s about giving your body a rest from constantly digesting food.”
During the two days of fasting, Mosley said he ate around 600 calories – the equivalent of two boiled eggs, a small piece of salmon, some vegetables and a cup of tea without sugar.
“It is not as bad as it sounds,” he said. “I have a very nice dinner on Saturday night and then I don’t eat again until Tuesday lunchtime.
“It’s not as if you are starving yourself, you are just having a short sharp treatment.”
He added: “The body is very good at dealing with this and it actually starts to burn fat, which is what you want it to do.”
