Omega-3 fatty acids, and in particular DHA, are associated with increased attention scores in adolescents

Attention scores among adolescents significantly increased after omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA, supplementation, according to a new study.

The research, published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience, looked at the effect of different dosages of omega-3 on the attention scores of 60 healthy adolescents aged between 13 and 16.

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil, and is known to be essential for brain development and function.

The study found that attention scores were significantly higher in the group that received the highest dose of DHA, compared to the group that received the placebo.

Lead author Dr. Alex Richardson said that the findings suggest that omega-3 supplementation could be a useful intervention for adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

“Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that DHA is involved in attention regulation and suggest that omega-3 fatty acids, and DHA in particular, may be a useful intervention for ADHD,” Richardson said.

“This is an important study as it is the first to look at the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on attention in healthy adolescents,” she added.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Oxford in the UK and theUniversity of Southampton in the UK.

There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that omega-3 fatty acids, and in particular DHA, are associated with increased attention scores in adolescents.

A recent study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders found that supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids for three months led to significant improvements in attention scores in a group of adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Another study, published in the same journal, found that adolescents with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood had significantly better attention scores than those with lower levels.

Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to play a role in brain development and function, and this may explain why they are associated with improved attention scores. DHA, in particular, is an important omega-3 fatty acid for brain health, and our bodies are not able to make it on their own.

Given the growing body of evidence linking omega-3 fatty acids to improved attention scores, it makes sense to include them in the diet. Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, and nuts and seeds such as chia and flaxseeds.
