We’re all unique snowflakes, right? That’s what we’ve been told our entire lives. And to some extent, it’s true. We all have our own set of DNA that makes us who we are.
But new research from the University of Southern California indicates that we may be more “one of the crowd” than we thought.
The study, which was published in the journal Nature, used a form of artificial intelligence called Deep Learning to analyzed 3.4 million brain scans. What they found was that despite our individual differences, our brains are actually quite similar.
In fact, the researchers were able to predict certain brain features, like the thickness of the cortex, with over 90% accuracy.
So what does this mean for us?
Well, it indicates that we may be more alike than we think. And while our individual differences do make us unique, they may not be as significant as we once thought.
Of course, this is just one study and more research is needed to confirm its findings. But it’s an interesting look at how we humans may not be as special as we like to think we are.
In a world of ever-growing individualism, it’s a relief to know that we’re not as unique as we think. New artificial intelligence research indicates that, when it comes to our behavior, we’re a lot like everyone else.
The study, conducted by a team of international researchers, used a machine learning algorithm to analyze over 15,000 hours of human interaction. What they found is that, when it comes to how we act, we’re more similar to others than we are different.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that we’re all exactly the same. The researchers did find some areas where people tended to diverge from the crowd. For example, people were more likely to be angular (i.e., independent and assertive) in their thinking, while women were more likely to be analytical and men were more likely to be emotional.
But on the whole, the study showed that we’re not as special as we like to think we are. So the next time you’re feeling a bit down about being just another face in the crowd, remember that, in some ways, that’s not such a bad thing.
