According to a study conducted by the University of Exeter, positive childhood experiences of blue spaces such as being near the ocean, rivers, or lakes, are linked to better adult well-being. The study, which surveyed 2,000 adults in the UK, found that those who had positive experiences of blue spaces as children were more likely to report higher levels of satisfaction with their lives as adults.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Mathew White, said that the findings suggest that “connecting with nature during childhood can have lasting benefits for our wellbeing.” He added that “these findings add to the growing body of evidence that time in nature can improve our health and wellbeing, and they have important implications for policy-makers, planners, and parents.”

A recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that children who had positive experiences in blue spaces such as the ocean, beaches, and lakes were more likely to report higher levels of well-being as adults.

The study surveyed more than 1,000 adults in Australia and New Zealand, and found that those who had positive childhood experiences in blue spaces were more likely to report higher levels of life satisfaction, happiness, and sense of worthiness.

lead author, Dr. Fay Goodwin, said that the findings suggest that blue spaces could be important for promoting positive mental health in childhood and throughout the lifespan.

“Our findings suggest that positive childhood experiences in blue spaces may have long-lasting effects on well-being,” she said.

“This is in line with other research which has found that exposure to nature can have positive effects on mental health.

“While more research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying these effects, the findings of this study suggest that blue spaces could be important for promoting positive mental health and well-being across the lifespan.”
