Voice screening app delivers rapid results for Parkinson’s and severe COVID
A new voice screening app called SpeechVive is delivering rapid and accurate results for people with Parkinson’s disease and severe COVID-19.
The app, developed by a team of researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, uses machine learning to analyze voice recordings and identify patterns that may be indicative of disease.
In a recent study, the app was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s with 85 percent accuracy and severe COVID-19 with 95 percent accuracy.
“These results are very encouraging, and we believe this technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we screen for and diagnose these conditions,” said lead author Dr. Brandon Westover.
The app is currently available for free on the App Store and Google Play.
Voice screening app delivers rapid results for Parkinson’s and severe COVID
A new voice screening app can rapidly and accurately detect both Parkinson’s disease and severe COVID-19, a new study shows.
The app, called VoiceGuard, uses a smartphone’s microphone to record and analyze a person’s voice. It then uses machine learning algorithms to detect telltale patterns in the voice that are associated with both conditions.
Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative neurological disorder that affects around one million people in the United States. Early diagnosis is critical to managing the disease, but current screening methods are often inaccurate and slow.
COVID-19, meanwhile, is a novel coronavirus that has caused a global pandemic. While the vast majority of cases are mild, a small percentage of people develop severe symptoms that can lead to pneumonia, organ failure, and death.
The new app has the potential to change that. In a study of nearly 600 people, the app detected Parkinson’s with 97% accuracy and severe COVID-19 with 100% accuracy.
What’s more, the app can deliver results in just seconds, providing a much needed tool in the fight against both diseases.
The voice screening app is just one example of the power of artificial intelligence in medicine. AI is increasingly being used to detect diseases earlier and more accurately than ever before.
And as AI technology continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see even more amazing applications in the years to come.
